Lee Schoenbeck - (Attorney)
Lee is certified as a Civil
Trial Specialist by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. Only about 25 attorneys
in South Dakota have achieved this designation. To be certified in this
specialty, the attorney must meet rigorous requirements for jury trial
experience, pass a written exam, and pass a peer review, which is done by
confidential references from other attorneys and from judges within the state.
Lee grew up in Webster, South Dakota. He practices primarily in the areas
of personal injury litigation, insurance litigation, commercial litigation,
estate planning litigation, and professional negligence. In May of 2012,
in an insurance company bad faith case, Lee obtained a $2.4 million verdict
against Nationwide Insurance from a Day County jury. In 1997, in an insurance
fraud case, Lee obtained a verdict of $559,507.20 from a Roberts County,
South Dakota jury. In 1998, in an underinsurance suit, Lee obtained a verdict
of $600,000 from a Marshall Country jury. All three verdicts were the largest
in the history of each county.
Lee is a 1980 Augustana College graduate and a 1984 graduate of the University
of South Dakota School of Law. He was the States Attorney for Day County
from 1985-1989. In 1995, Lee was elected to a two-year term in the State
Senate representing three and one-half counties in northeast South Dakota.
Lee also served in the South Dakota State Senate from 2003 through 2006,
serving as a leader of the State Senate the last two years.In 2014 Lee was
elected to the House of Representatives.
Lee is licensed to practice law in the State of South Dakota, the Federal
District Court for the District of South Dakota, and the Sisseton Wahpeton
Oyate Tribal Court. He is a member of the South Dakota Trial Lawyers Association
(SDTLA) and the American Association for Justice (AAJ).
Lee is active in the Catholic Church and on the Catholic Community Foundation
for Eastern South Dakota. He also is involved with many outdoors and conservation
groups, and is an avid pheasant hunter.
Lee is a regular guest lecturer for the Insurance Law class at the University
of South Dakota School of Law. His lectures focus on the intricacies of insurance
litigation, and how to prepare and handle those cases.
Donna Schoenbeck - (Office Manager)
Donna started at
Schoenbeck Law, PC in December of 2006 as the office manager and part-time
Originally from Watertown, she is a graduate of Northern State University,
and is active in many community activities.
Karen J. Armstrong - (Paralegal)
After graduating from
Webster High School and the legal secretarial program at Watertown Business
University, Karen moved to Minneapolis. For the next two decades, she worked
at three downtown law firms: Ogurak Law Office; Hvass, Weisman & King,
Chartered; and Schwebel, Goetz & Sieben, P.A. These firms primarily practiced
in the areas of personal injury, medical malpractice, and wrongful death.
After her father passed away in 1995, Karen moved back to Webster in 1996
to be near her mother. She worked at Schoenbeck Law, PC from 1996
to 2004 as a legal secretary. In 2004, Karen moved to Belle Fourche, South
Dakota, and worked at the Barker Wilson Law Firm. While there, she obtained
her Professional Legal Secretary and Professional Paralegal certifications
from NALS, Inc. (The Association for Legal Professionals). In 2007, Karen
moved back to the Webster area and worked at Consolidated Power Producers,
Inc., and Dakotacare before returning to Schoenbeck Law, PC in 2010.
Karen is married and has one daughter, one stepdaughter, one stepson, six
grandchildren, and one great grandchild. In her spare time, she enjoys spending
time with her grandchildren, quilting, gardening, and reading.
Jennifer X. Frederick, CP - (Paralegal)
Jen graduated from
SDSU in 2001 with a bachelor's degree in sociology. She joined Spears Law
Office, PC, as a legal secretary in 2002, and took on the duties of a paralegal
in 2007. Jen went on to earn the "Certified Paralegal" designation from the
National Association of Legal Assistants in 2008.
In 2011, Jen was an inaugural member of the South Dakota Paralegal Association's
360° Leadership Academy. She has remained active in SDPA, recently elected
to 2nd Vice-President and currently serving as co-chair on the Newsletter
Committee. Jen was awarded by her peers with the 2011/2012 SDPA Outstanding
Member of the Year.
Jen and her husband, Mark, enjoy spending time with her step-daughter and
grandson. Jen enjoys reading, RVing, and rooting for the Vikings.
